I actually had a pretty great 2014. I finally got off my butt and applied to Grad School (well this was a starting in 2013 thing but mostly 2014) and I got in! I moved. I made some great new friends. I'm working toward a degree I'm really passionate about and looking forward to the future. I hope 2015 is even better.

On a whim I signed up for [community profile] cottoncandy_bingo in the hopes of writing some good fluff for it. Mostly just want to write about the most minor of characters and canon het.

So I saw Prometheus and I have thoughts, largely of a positive nature.

One (semi-spoilery) problem )

On to things of substance.

So I saw it. And I have thoughts. Overall I really liked it.

Spoilers have more details. )

Even if it wasn't perfect I still liked it a lot and will probably see it a few more times. Can't wait until the sequel, still hoping for Kristen Bell Johanna and Armie Hammer Finnick.

Leap Day!

I just wanted a post on the 29th. Because unusual dates have always appealed to me.

I spent the past five days in California. So naturally I have returned just in time for snow.
brigid31: (Working)
Things I have done today instead of anything productive:

Read through a bunch of my old entries (oh, college me you had a lot of dumb opinions!)
Read tumblr
Watched TV (though I do not consider REVENGE! a waste of my time.
Played flash games
Hung around on Twitter

I didn't even manage to read a page of a book today, though I did write some fic that I was too lazy to type up tonight!
brigid31: (Keanu-Sandra-Speed-mooreoaks)
Revenge is going to be huge for Yuletide this year right? Because as of last night we had actual canon queers and in such a way that absolutely sets up possibilities for more. And the possibility of threesomes! So lots of people are going to write Revenge.sorta not even spoilery )

Personally I would like some Pan Am fic. If I was writing fic just now I would definitely write a long fic for Pan Am where Maggie starts to school Ted on his privilege and then eventually he'd be less horrible and sometime when he didn't even know she was around he would school someone else on how they are being a sexist jerk and Maggie would hear and then they'd eventually date. For Yuletide I feel like asking for a story with Laura from Pan Am discovering she is a big lesbian. It is honestly my fondest wish.
brigid31: (Cate Blanchett Queen)
I am so excited for Game of Thrones.  I've been very happy with the casting and I trust HBO to make good product.  They just put up a new trailer and a production clip and it just makes me more excited.  I hope this show turns out as amazing as it should be!
brigid31: (Cate Blanchett Queen)
I've been rewatching Firefly this summer and I just got to "Objects in Space" and it gave me thoughts so I thought I'd share them.

Joss Whedon (quite rightly) gets criticized for his obsession with crazy girls. And River certainly fits this mold. But I love her. For most of the run she is merely crazy, she doesn't have any agency (it's been taken from her by the Alliance) and it doesn't seem like she'll ever be able to get it back. "Objects in Space" changes this, it shows the beginning of a real arc for River that we never got on TV and only got a little bit in the movie.

A long Ramble on  )

That probably didn't make much sense since it is the middle of the night but it needed to come out of my head.

Dreamwidth

I got this journal way back at the beginning of Dreamwidth but haven't really ever used it. It is very nice though and I think I ought to make more of an effort. Of course I rarely post on my LJ ever so I don't suspect I'll use it all that often but stranger things have happened.
brigid31: (Keanu-Sandra-Speed-mooreoaks)
I read an article/interview with M. Night Shyamalan about The Last Airbender and then I read comments on ONTD (because I hate myself apparently) and it just makes me so upset. I understand why soem people don't care (even though they should) but I just get so mad when I read the justifications. People actually defend the casting because "movies have to appeal to lots of different people." And that doesn't make them angry. Why aren't they mad that Hollywood is saying that we white people can't identify with people who aren't white? It makes me furious and insulted but they seem to think this is perfectly okay.

I also watched the finale of Doctor Who. spoilers live under the cut )
brigid31: (Brokeback Mountain)
I loved The Pacific. I figured I would going into it because of my love of Band of Brothers but I didn't know how much it would grab me. Particularly the fantastic performance of Joe Mazello as Eugene Sledge and the equally great performance of Rami Malek as Snafu his friend in combat. The two of them together were fantastic (and I just keep saying "his little face" when I look at this picture and then I get a little sad.)

But someone has fixed my sadness, but in the good way where it still kind of hurts. And you should go read this right away.

All These Roads
A Post War AU with Sledge and Snafu and meeting again. It's just beautiful and sad and right. If you wanted to read about them, this is what you should read. Also it's long, so you can just sink right into it.

Joy!

I finished my Yuletide story! It needs a solid look over and a beta but it's all done! I'm so excited. I wish uploading was open because once I'm finished with this I just want to post it. I mean after it gets checked over. Also I like to know what number I am and hope that it is low!

Also, I watched the Alice miniseries that was on Syfy last weekend. I kind of loved it. It was exactly the kind of awesome/terrible things that the Syfy channel can excel at. And Alice/Hatter is totally the new ship I am obsessed with. Alice is tough but with a center filled with issues and Hatter is a con man with a heart of gold, or a charming rogue, both of which are totally tropes I love. And Hatter is adorable and British! (I also found out that in real life the actor who played Hatter is engaged to Hanah from S Club! Which makes him even more adorable!)

Anyway Alice/Hatter is where it is at. I might even write some.

Oh man, Rahm Emmanuel just made me cry. He wasn't even trying to. It's supposed to be funny. But I can't listen to him talk about my beloved Sarah Lawrence (which it is so obvious that he loves as well) without feeling a little teary.

I didn't know how lucky I was to be there when I was there. I want to go back.

District 9

I saw District 9 tonight (should have seen it yesterday to go with all the nines!) and I thought it was very interesting if not exactly all that people hyping it have said that it was. I like it and I think it's worth watching.

"I like curios, millenary, and daguerrotypes as much as the next gal, but I can't get behind the values of those eras. I wouldn't want to live surrounded by those mementos."- some commenter on Jezebel.

I feel like this quote is the most perfect storm of Internet comment. It has a certain pretentiousness combined with an outrage about something trivial that just completely makes the internet. If only there was a lolcat somewhere in there at the same time.

I love the days when all the numbers are the same. 09/09/09. It just looks cool.
brigid31: (Keanu-Sandra-Speed-mooreoaks)
I am so loving Kyle and Fish on One Life to Live. This story hits so many of my favorite tropes it isn't even funny. Toss in the brother of Chris Evans and I am a very happy girl. Honestly Brett Claywell and Scott Evans are so good together it isn't even funny. I just want to watch them all them time. I can't wait to see what comes next (as we surely move into the even more angsty part of the story.) I love my soap angst. It's always so delicious.

I do have a tiny bit of an (probably) unpopular opinionno real spoilers )
brigid31: (Keanu-Sandra-Speed-mooreoaks)
I defy anyone who watched Sesame Street as a kid not to watch this this tribute and not tear up at least a little. When I was little I wanted to live on Sesame Street so badly. I don't think much has changed all these years later.
brigid31: (Keanu-Sandra-Speed-mooreoaks)
I saw Inglourious Basterds today and it was awesome. It's so much more than what the commercials promised and that was great.
