I was just watching "Restless" in syndication and remembered how much I love that episode. It's probably my favorite episode of Buffy. I just love the surreal story line and the way so many things were foreshadowed.

I also have a really funny story connected to it. My English teacher the year it aired, Mr. Cassavaugh, was a big Buffy fan. My best friend and I would sometimes talk about it in front of him and he would give us insights into how it related to mythology and other little tidbits. He was probably one of the coolest teachers I ever had. Most people didn't really 'get' him. He could seem really standoffish and most of the kids in our school were not smart enough to understand why he was so cool.

Anyway, we were sitting in the library talking about Buffy, when in comes Mr. Cassavaugh. He came over to our table and said, "Last nights Buffy was a perfect example of surrealism." We proceeded to have a forty-five minute discussion on the various symbols and why it was a great show. I still remember most of that conversation today (even think I have some of it written down somewhere.)

I remember it because he was the first adult who ever talked seriously about Buffy. He understood that it wasn't about the monsters, it was about the metaphors. He retired last year, we had one last talk about Buffy. It was a good way to end things.

He was the coolest teacher I ever had. I think I'll always remember him, the teacher cool enough to watch Buffy and then talk about it with his students.
